PrimeSource- DAM Taxonomy

Originally hired to assist with QA and image processing for over 2,000 assets at PrimeSource, a national building products company, I quickly noticed friction between their limited digital asset management (DAM) system and the evolving complexity of their product imagery. This was especially the case with the introduction of multiple-angled shots with their Villa Valentina line.

Previous image sets only required seven standardized views, but the new batch introduced angles and compositions that weren’t accounted for in the existing naming system. This led to an interesting internal operations design challenge: how might we scale the existing taxonomy without disrupting established systems?

PrimeSource— Villa Valentina pulls and knobs

1. Identifying Naming Limitations

Originally the provided naming taxonomy did not allow for nuanced angles, as seen above.

For example: example123-photo-product-3-quarter-angled-3000x3000.png lacked specificity and adaptability.

2. Updated Taxonomy

After stakeholder review, I introduced a view modifier column to the taxonomy.

The revised format:

allowed for more precise categorization and expanded flexibility.

3. Scaling with Rules

Using my prior experience with SOPs and system design, I created scalable guidelines to extend the image variations from 7 to 46 potential combinations.

4. E-commerce Production & Long-term Flexibility

This updated taxonomy enabled PrimeSource to scale their e-commerce DAM while maintaining compatibility with vendors and internal workflows. Ensuring future flexibility across products and campaigns regardless of image variations.
